How to learn

How long does it take to learn European Portuguese?

An honest answer, without miracle promises: what the official figures say, what changes the timeline, and what you can realistically expect in a year.

The official reference

The US Foreign Service Institute, which trains diplomats, puts Portuguese in its easiest group for English speakers (Category I) and lists about 24 weeks of study for it (for Portuguese in general, not specifically the European variety). But those are full-time intensive courses, with many hours of class every day, aiming at professional working proficiency.

For most adults, with one or two lessons a week and some study in between, the same journey takes much longer, usually a few years to reach a confident, independent level.

What makes it faster or slower

Your languages. If you speak Spanish, Italian or French, grammar and vocabulary come much faster. Time in contact with the language matters more than anything: listening, speaking and reading a little every day beats one long session a week. Pronunciation is the real challenge of European Portuguese: understanding spoken Portuguese usually takes longer than reading it.

A realistic first year

With steady work (for example two lessons a week plus 20–30 minutes a day of your own practice), many learners can handle everyday situations at around A2 within a year: shopping, the doctor, simple paperwork, talking about themselves. Every person is different, so treat this as a rough guide, not a promise.
