The CIPLE (A2) exam: what it is and how to prepare
The CIPLE is the A2 certificate in Portuguese as a foreign language, from CAPLE at the University of Lisbon. Here is how it works, in plain words.
The three parts
Reading and writing (1 h 15 min, 45%): short notices and texts with multiple-choice and matching questions, then two short texts to write. Listening (30 min, 30%): everyday recordings with multiple-choice questions. Speaking (about 15 min, 25%): usually in pairs, with examiners. You talk about yourself, act out a situation and discuss a simple current topic.
The results
You pass from 55%: Suficiente (55–69%), Bom (70–84%), Muito Bom (85–100%). Dates, fees and exam centres change every year, so always check the CAPLE website.
How to prepare
Do full practice exams with a timer. Knowing the format calms nerves. Train your ear every day: listening is where European Portuguese is hardest. Write short, simple sentences you're sure of, and answer every point the task asks for. Practise speaking out loud, ideally with a partner, using the exam's three parts.
CIPLE and nationality
The 2026 nationality law requires knowledge of the language and culture, proved by a test or a certificate. As far as we could confirm (latest check: August 2026), the rules for the new test had not been published yet. Confirm the current requirements with the IRN or a lawyer before applying.
Practise with a full mock exam
Rumo ao CIPLE is a complete practice exam with tips, model answers and a quiz on Portugal's culture and institutions.
